Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdülkadir Efendi was the child of a head of a sub-district (nahiye müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülkadir also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Abdülkadir began work in Diyarbakır in 1894/95, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1897/98, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Abdülkadir in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Diyarbakır, the birthplace.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 400 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Diyarbakır, when one in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05. An entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerinde Diyarbekirli yöneticiler" by İSHAK ŞİMŞEK (2013) probably refers to Abdülkadir, since the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree.
