Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Şekerciyan Ohannes Aram Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Şekerciyan Ohannes Aram also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Şekerciyan Ohannes Aram began work in Diyarbakır in 1893/94, at about 30, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 30 or older. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Şekerciyan Ohannes Aram as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Baghdad (Bağdat). Şekerciyan Ohannes Aram then moved to Mosul in 1897/98, then back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1905. The last post was in Elazığ in 1905/06.
