Life#
Mustafa Bahaettin Efendi was born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1890/91, at about 26, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mustafa Bahaettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Serres (Siroz). Mustafa Bahaettin then moved to Kavala from 1897 to 1901. The last posts were in Serres again from 1901 to 1906.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 300 in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Serres, when one in five paid officials earned less. Over ten years the salaries add up to 34,680 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
