Life#
Born in Destarli in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Abdurrahman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Abdurrahman had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1886/87, Abdurrahman began work in Beypazarı, paid from the start, on 285 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Abdurrahman as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beypazarı, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Ayaş from 1892 to 1901, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1902 to 1904, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1903/04. The last posts were in Eskişehir from 1904 to 1907.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Seyyar Memur in Izmir, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 75,240 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
