Life#
Born in Yozgat in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Mehmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ankara in 1885/86, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 242 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Mehmet in Beypazarı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet to Ankara from 1892 to 1895, then Kayseri from 1895 to 1903. The last post was in Çiçekdağı (Mecidiye) in 1903/04, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili).
The salary went from 242 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 470 in 1903/04, the peak, as Müdür Vekili in Çiçekdağı, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 57,048 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
