Life#
Born in Kemah in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Osman Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Osman Nuri had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1876/77, Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Osman Nuri in Pirot (Şehirköy) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Osman Nuri to Ioannina in 1878, then Gelibolu from 1878 to 1883. Next came Sivas in 1883/84 and Alacahan in 1884/85, then a return to Sivas from 1885 to 1893. Osman Nuri then moved to Danismend in 1894/95, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), then Kayseri from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Yozgat from 1900 to 1903.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 500 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Danismend, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 140,040 kuruş, 88 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
