Life#
This official was born in Çorlu in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1872/73, the official began work in Edirne, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places the official in Pirot (Şehirköy) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow the official to ten places in 19 years, from Karli to Sigri (Sığrı), then Dikili from 1896 to 1901. For 1878 to 1880 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Ayvalık from 1901 to 1904. Ten provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by only 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 600 in 1878, as Muhabere Memuru in Karli, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years pay ended where it began, at 500 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. In all, 25 years of salary come to 145,140 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
