Life#
Born in İskilip in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Hafız Mustafa Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Nuri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Çankırı in 1886/87, at about 21, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mustafa Nuri in Samsun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Yozgat from 1896 to 1903. The last post was in Boğazlıyan in 1903/04.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Samsun, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years pay ended below where it began, 475 kuruş against 500. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
