Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Mehmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Şükrü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1889/90, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1899/1900, every annual entry places Mehmet Şükrü in the same office, stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
