Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), İbrahim Halil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1888/89, İbrahim Halil began work in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İbrahim Halil in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a policeman (Polis), where the entries run to 1896/97, with a rise to a post in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi) in 1896/97. The last posts were in Edirne and Malkoclar from 1897 to 1903 and Aziziye in 1903/04, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1897/98.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 500 in 1897/98, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
