Life#
Born in Siirt in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Abdullah Mazhar Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Urfele in 1887/88, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Abdullah Mazhar in Urfele as Mevsillik. The lists have no entry for 1890 to 1902. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1902 to 1905 and Fizan in 1905/06, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1902/03. The farthest post, Fizan, lay about 3,300 km from Siirt, and 38 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Fizan, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less.
