Life#
Born in Siirt in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Van in 1888/89, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 225 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Sason in the Mahkeme Kalemi. The lists have no entry for 1893 to 1895. The last posts were in Van and Bitlis from 1895 to 1901 and Muş from 1901 to 1903, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1895/96.
The salary went from 225 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 340 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Van, when one in four paid officials earned less.
