Life#
Born in Shumen (Şumnu) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ali Galip Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph inspector (telgraf müfettişi). At about 16, in 1890/91, Ali Galip began work in Kastamonu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Ali Galip in Trabzon as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1894/95. Ali Galip then moved to Istanbul from 1896 to 1898, then Büyükada from 1898 to 1904, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1903/04. The last posts were in Konya in 1904/05, as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür) and Gelemis from 1905 to 1907.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 1,500 in 1905/06, as 1. Müdür in Gelemis, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
