Life#
Behor Mois Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Behor Mois also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Behor Mois began work in Beyoğlu in 1894/95, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Behor Mois in Büyükada as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Erenköy from 1902 to 1905 and Yeniköy in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 330 in 1905/06, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Yeniköy, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 19,560 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
