Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), İbrahim Halil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. İbrahim Halil had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1896/97, İbrahim Halil began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Izmir (İzmir), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with İbrahim Halil as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Izmir, where the entries run to 1902/03. İbrahim Halil then moved to Erenköy in 1903/04, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1905 to 1910, first in the Piyango Kalemi, from 1909/10 as Maliye Mufettisi.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 3,000 in 1909/10, as Maliye Mufettisi in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
