Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Musa Şevket Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Musa Şevket also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Musa Şevket began work in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From 1896/97 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Musa Şevket in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1902/03 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru) and from 1903/04 as Basmemur Muavini.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Basmemur Muavini in Istanbul, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 18,840 kuruş, 39 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
