Life#
İbrahim Hakkı Efendi was born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; İbrahim Hakkı also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İbrahim Hakkı began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 18, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places İbrahim Hakkı in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1896/97. The last posts were in Sinop from 1904 to 1907, with a rise to a post in the Nufus Kalemi in 1906/07.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 450 in 1896/97, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 60 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
