Life#
Born in Eğirdir in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdullah Efendi was the child of a soldier (asker). Abdullah had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 19, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Abdullah as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu. Abdullah then moved to Izmir in 1896/97. The last posts were in Beyoğlu again from 1897 to 1905.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 750 in 1896/97, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Izmir, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
