Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, Behor Menahim Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Behor Menahim also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Behor Menahim as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1899/1900. Behor Menahim then moved to Kırklareli in 1900/01. The last posts were in Beyoğlu again from 1901 to 1904.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 400 in 1901/02, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 26,460 kuruş, 44 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
