Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, İsak Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); İsak also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 22, in 1894/95, İsak began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with İsak as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Gelibolu from 1903 to 1905 and Beyoğlu again in 1905/06, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in 1903/04.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 550 in 1905/06, the peak, as Huk Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 37,260 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
