Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Nikola Haco Lulu Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Nikola Haco Lulu also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1895/96, to 1901/02, every annual entry places Nikola Haco Lulu in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 150 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 10,200 kuruş, 24 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
