Life#
Born in Kastamonu in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Cevdet Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Mehmet Cevdet had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 22, in 1895/96, Mehmet Cevdet began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Cevdet in Beyoğlu, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1906/07 as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 850 in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Beyoğlu, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
