Mehmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Hamdi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Mehmet Hamdi began work in Mudurnu in 1887/88, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mehmet Hamdi in Nallıhan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1895/96. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1896 to 1898 and Mudurnu in 1898/99.
