Life#
Mehmet Hayri Efendi was born in Mudurnu in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Mal Kalemi in Nallıhan in 1878, at about 22, paid from the start, on 190 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1878, with Mehmet Hayri as Mal Muduru Refaketi in Nallıhan, where the entries run to 1893/94. Mehmet Hayri then moved back to Mudurnu, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1901, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Ankara in 1901/02.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1878 to 300 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mudurnu, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 66,960 kuruş, 43 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
