Life#
Born in Mudurnu in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Mudurnu in 1897/98, at about 22, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Ankara as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1905 to 1909 the annual entries place Hüseyin Hüsnü in Mudurnu, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 300 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Mudurnu, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 15,600 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
