Life#
Mehmet Hulusi Efendi was born in Mudurnu in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Huteba". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Hulusi began work in Mudurnu in 1874/75, at about 20, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Mehmet Hulusi as Muvassil in Mudurnu, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1882/83. Mehmet Hulusi then moved to İnebolu from 1883 to 1886, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1883/84. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1886 to 1895.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 480 in 1893/94, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less.
