Life#
Mihran Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi). In all Mihran knew four languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 22, in 1876/77, Mihran began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Mihran as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Beyoğlu in 1880/81, then Tekirdağ from 1881 to 1893. The last posts were in Pristina in 1893/94 and Skopje in 1894/95 and Agios Nikolaos (Ayanikola) in 1895/96.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 500 in 1895/96, the peak, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Agios Nikolaos, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 62,400 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
