Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Niyazi Efendi was the child of a religious scholar (ulema). Work began in the Rusumat Kalemi in Trabzon in 1865/66, at about 15, on a first salary of 475 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with İbrahim Niyazi in the Mal Kitabeti in Vezirköprü. Next came Kırşehir from 1874 to 1878, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi), then Gelibolu from 1878 to 1880. İbrahim Niyazi then moved to Tekirdağ from 1882 to 1895. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Niyazi to Karesi from 1900 to 1907. The last posts were in Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1907 to 1909, with a rise to DH Muduru. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 475 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 2,000 in 1907/08, as DH Muduru in Trabzon, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 31 years the salaries add up to 396,156 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1908/09. İbrahim Niyazi received a rank (rütbe) and the Osmani order.
