Life#
Süleyman Faik Efendi was born in Çanakkale in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Çanakkale, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The records give first-work years from 1876 to 1880 (AH 1293 to 1297). The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Süleyman Faik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çanakkale, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1884/85, with a rise to a post in the Memleha Kitabeti in 1882/83. Süleyman Faik then moved to Tekirdağ from 1885 to 1905. The last post was in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 600 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Tekirdağ, when two in three paid officials earned less.
