Life#
İbrahim Edhem Efendi was born in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1835/36 (AH 1251) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 28, in 1863/64, İbrahim Edhem began work in the Karantina Kalemi in Mytilene, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with İbrahim Edhem in the Karantina Kitabeti in Mytilene, the birthplace. Next came Üsküdar from 1865 to 1871, then Kuşadası in 1871/72. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Edhem back to Mytilene from 1872 to 1880, then Çanakkale from 1880 to 1882. İbrahim Edhem then moved to Tekirdağ from 1882 to 1894, then Istanbul, Bursa and Konya from 1894 to 1900. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1900 to 1906, first as Mandapost Memuru, from 1902/03 in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası), from 1903/04 as Pul Basmemuru and from 1905/06 as a chief official (Başmemur). Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Seven provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 1,500 in 1895/96, as 1. Müdür in Bursa, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
