Life#
Mustafa Sabri Efendi was born in Sivas in 1836/37 (AH 1252) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mustafa Sabri began work in Sivas in 1862/63, at about 26, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Mustafa Sabri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Harput. Mustafa Sabri then moved to four places in ten years, then back to Sivas, the birthplace, from 1874 to 1878. Next came Baghdad (Bağdat) and Şanlıurfa (Urfa) from 1878 to 1883, then Diyarbakır from 1883 to 1894. The last posts were in Sivas again from 1894 to 1902, first as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür), from 1896/97 as 2. Müdür. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Entries spanning 41 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 1,500 in 1878/79, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Baghdad, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,200 kuruş. The list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
