Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1836/37 (AH 1252), Ali Haydar Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a mounted courier (tatar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1851/52, Ali Haydar began work in Silistra (Silistre), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Ali Haydar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beirut (Beyrut). Next came 12 places in 16 years, from Berhefiye to Tetovo (Kalkandelen), with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1880/81, then Preveza (Preveze) from 1886 to 1893, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1889/90. The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1893 to 1895. Few officials served in as many places; 17 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Tetovo, about 2,250 km from Baghdad, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 1,000 in 1893/94, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bitola, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
