Life#
Mehmet Methi Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1836/37 (AH 1252), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 16, in 1851/52, Mehmet Methi began work in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Kastamonu, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1851/52, names Mehmet Methi as Niyabet Memuru, with no place. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Methi to Ioannina (Yanya), Istanbul and Denizli from 1855 to 1868, then back to Istanbul from 1868 to 1879, with a rise to Sulh Mahkemesi Riyaseti in 1878 and to Istinaf Mahkemesi Baskani in 1878/79. Next came Beyoğlu from 1879 to 1886. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1886 to 1888.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1851/52 to a peak of 5,000 in 1878/79, as Istinaf Mahkemesi Baskani in Istanbul, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 3,600 kuruş. In 1853/54 no official in the lists was paid more; only 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary were ever the best paid of a year. Over 37 years the salaries add up to 1,053,000 kuruş, 4.6 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The list of 1888/89 (AH 1306) gives the status word Vefat (death). Mehmet Methi received a rank (rütbe).
