Life#
Mehmet Sukru Efendi was born in Mardin in 1836/37 (AH 1252), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "esraftan". Few officials knew Kurdish; only 12 of the 5,211 officials did.
Work began in Bergama in 1863/64, at about 27. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Mehmet Sukru in Bergama as Niyabet. Next came six places in 13 years, from Mosul (Musul) to Ioannina (Yanya), then Van from 1878 to 1882. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Sukru back to Ankara from 1883 to 1885, with a rise to Adliye Mufettisi, then Muş in 1886/87. The last entry, for 1887/88, names neither a title nor a place. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 2,000 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 7,000 in 1883/84, the peak, as Adliye Mufettisi in Ankara, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 21 years the salaries add up to 1,065,000 kuruş, 7.7 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by 16 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The list of 1888/89 (AH 1306) gives the status word Vefat (death). Mehmet Sukru received a rank (rütbe).
