Life#
Born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1827/28 (AH 1243) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Hilmi Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Hasan Hilmi had four years of schooling, at Medrese, the Islamic college, and wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
Work began in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) in 1855/56, at about 28, paid from the start, on 750 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1855/56, places Hasan Hilmi in Afyonkarahisar as an examining clerk (Mümeyyiz). Next came Bursa and Bilecik from 1856 to 1861, then Novi Pazar (Yenipazar) from 1861 to 1877, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi). Hasan Hilmi then moved to Pirot in 1877/78, then back to Afyonkarahisar from 1878 to 1879. The annual lists then follow Hasan Hilmi to Niğde from 1880 to 1886. The last post was in Burdur in 1886/87.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1855/56 to 1,000 in 1861/62, the peak, in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi in Novi Pazar, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 336,840 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1886/87.
