Life#
Born in Paris in 1828/29 (AH 1244), Odi Efendi came from the Christian (Hristiyan) community, French (Fransiz) by nationality; the father's occupation was "Mosher". At about 27, in 1855/56, Odi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 750 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1855/56, places Odi in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Odi to four places in eight years, then back to Beyoğlu from 1864 to 1868. Odi then moved to Diyarbakır, Bosna and Pristina (Priştine) from 1868 to 1880, then Konya from 1880 to 1892. Next came Adana in 1892/93. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1893 to 1897. The farthest post, Baghdad, lay about 3,850 km from Paris, and 3 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Entries spanning 43 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1855/56 to 4,000 in 1862/63, the peak, as Müfettiş in Baghdad, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97; the list of 1897/98 (AH 1315) gives the status word Vefat (death).
