Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1832/33 (AH 1248), Mahmut Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mahmut Hamdi was taught by a private teacher.
Work began in the Zaptiye Kalemi in Viransehir in 1846/47, at about 15, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1855/56, with Mahmut Hamdi in the Zabita Kitabeti in Cizre. Next came a return to Kemaliye, the birthplace, from 1856 to 1863. The last post was in Kayseri in 1863/64.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1855/56, in the Zabita Kitabeti in Cizre, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 32,400 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1863/64. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Eğinli (Kemaliyeli) Devlet adamları ..." by ÖMER FERİT İMLAK (2012) probably refers to Mahmut Hamdi, since the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree.
