Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1840/41 (AH 1256), Ahmet Hazım Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Work began in Mosul (Musul) in 1860/61, at about 20, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 330 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ahmet Hazım as an official (Memur) in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener), where the entries run to 1868/69, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1868/69. Next came Diyarbakır, Siirt and Khanaqin (Hanikin) from 1869 to 1876, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1875/76, then Al-Hindiya (Hindiye) from 1876 to 1880. Ahmet Hazım then moved to Gürün and Tenos from 1882 to 1885, then Mazgirt from 1885 to 1893. The last posts were in Pah from 1893 to 1897. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 330 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,000 in 1875/76, as 2. Müdür in Khanaqin, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Eğinli (Kemaliyeli) Devlet adamları ..." by ÖMER FERİT İMLAK (2012) probably refers to Ahmet Hazım, since the name and the birthplace agree.
