Life#
Born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Cemal Efendi was the child of a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Cemal also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Cemal began work in Yenisehir in 1869/70, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 140 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Cemal in Karvice as Muvassil, where the entries run to 1878. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1884. The annual lists then follow Cemal to Izmir (İzmir) from 1884 to 1903, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Tire in 1903/04 and Izmir again in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 140 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as Seyyar Memur in Izmir, when half the paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 106,440 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
