Life#
Hasan Basri Efendi was born in Keşan in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Hasan Basri began work in Keşan in 1868/69, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 155 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Hasan Basri in Feres (Ferecik) as Muvassil, where the entries run to 1873/74. Next came six places in ten years, from Volos (Golos) to Yozgat, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1874/75, then Diyadin from 1884 to 1890. The annual lists then follow Hasan Basri to Çemişgezek, Pah, Mazgirt and Ayvalık, four places in eight years. The last post was in Babrotin in 1898/99. Few officials served in as many places; 38 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 155 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 600 in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in Metsovo, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 27 years the salaries add up to 142,020 kuruş, 84 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
