Life

İbrahim Subhi Bey was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Subhi also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.

At about 13, in 1875/76, İbrahim Subhi began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with İbrahim Subhi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). The last posts were in Edirne from 1877 to 1880, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1878/79.

Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 500 in 1878/79, as Memur in Edirne, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1879/80.
