Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Subhi Efendi was the child of a chief telegraph director (telgraf başmüdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1875/76, at about 13, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places İbrahim Subhi in Ioannina (Yanya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1877 to 1880 the annual entries place İbrahim Subhi in Edirne.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 500 in 1878/79, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1879/80.
