Life#
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Edirne in 1868/69, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places İbrahim Ethem in Edirne as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow İbrahim Ethem to Sofia (Sofya) and Niš (Niş) from 1874 to 1878, then Şanlıurfa (Urfa) from 1878 to 1883. İbrahim Ethem then moved to Diyarbakır from 1883 to 1887, then Aleppo (Halep) from 1887 to 1898, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1893/94. The last posts were in Edirne in 1898/99 and Aydın in 1899/1900.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 2,800 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Başmüdür in Aydın, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 355,680 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
