Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1854/55 (AH 1271), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 23, in 1878, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Van, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Ahmet Hamdi in Gevaş as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), where the entries run to 1881/82. Next came Van from 1882 to 1887, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru), then Erzincan from 1887 to 1892. Ahmet Hamdi then moved to Manavgat in 1892/93, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), then Malazgirt from 1893 to 1899. The last posts were in Şemdinli in 1899/1900 and Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1905/06. The lists have no entry for 1900 to 1905.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1878 to 600 in 1892/93, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Manavgat, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 115,020 kuruş, 78 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
