Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Aziz Mahmud Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Aziz Mahmud had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 14, in 1868/69, Aziz Mahmud began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Aziz Mahmud as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mersin. Aziz Mahmud then moved to Berce, Gabrovo (Gabrova) and Maslak from 1873 to 1878, then Sapanca from 1879 to 1885. Next came Eskişehir in 1885/86, then Biga from 1886 to 1895, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Aziz Mahmud to Simav, Bartın and Ayvalık from 1895 to 1901. The last posts were in Köyceğiz from 1901 to 1905. Ten provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by only 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 750 in 1873/74, as 2. Müdür in Berce, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
