Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, Bohur Badur Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at the Kamanto Mektebi; Bohur Badur also wrote French and Italian.
Work began in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Bohur Badur in Niš (Niş) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1877/78. Next came Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1878 to 1882, then Ardos from 1883 to 1891. The annual lists then follow Bohur Badur to Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1891 to 1893, then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1893 to 1902. The last post was in Jerusalem again in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1870/71, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Niš, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 32 years pay ended below where it began, 500 kuruş against 600; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde İstanbul doğumlu Yahudi ve ..." by AHMET SÜRMEN (2011) probably refers to Bohur Badur, since the name and the birthplace agree.
