Life#
Born in Cebeli lubnan in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Esir Efendi was the child of a religious scholar (ulema). Mustafa Esir began work in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 12, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Mustafa Esir in Hama as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1875/76. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Esir to Beirut (Beyrut) from 1876 to 1878, then back to Hama from 1878 to 1887. Mustafa Esir then moved to Tripoli (Trablusgarp) and Suriye from 1887 to 1892, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1887/88, then back to Beirut from 1892 to 1909, with a rise to Mufettis Vekili in 1903/04. The last post was in Suriye again in 1909/10. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 39 years or more.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 1,600 in 1903/04, the peak, as Mufettis Vekili in Beirut, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
