Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Mehmet Cevdet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Mehmet Cevdet had four years of schooling, at Medrese, the Islamic college.
Work began in Istanbul in 1878, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1878/79 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Cevdet in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in İnebolu. A career like this is rare; 41 of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 650 in 1903/04, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 176,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
