Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Bey was born in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at Medrese, the Islamic college; Ahmet Hamdi also wrote Turkish and spoke Albanian and Bulgarian. Albanian was rare in the service, known to 18 of the 5,211 officials.
Ahmet Hamdi began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Skopje in 1863/64, at about 12, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Ahmet Hamdi in Skopje, the birthplace, as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), where the entries run to 1880/81, with a rise to DH Baskitabeti in 1874/75. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Hamdi to Peja in 1881/82, in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi), then Denizli from 1883 to 1888. Ahmet Hamdi then moved to Komotini (Gümülcine) and Kırklareli from 1888 to 1893. The last posts were in Tekirdağ from 1894 to 1897.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,200 in 1888/89, in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi in Komotini, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97. Ahmet Hamdi received a rank (rütbe).
