Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Sezai Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Hasan Sezai began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Sofia in 1866/67, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Hasan Sezai as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ihtiman (İhtiman). Hasan Sezai then moved back to Sofia, the birthplace, from 1869 to 1873, then Kyustendil (Köstendil) and Ihtiman from 1874 to 1877, with a rise to Demiryolu Memuru in 1874/75 and to a post in the Idare Kalemi in 1876/77. The annual lists then follow Hasan Sezai to Preševo (Preşova) from 1880 to 1888, then four places in 17 years. The last post was in Drama in 1906/07. Entries spanning 40 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,000 in 1876/77, in the Idare Kalemi in Ihtiman, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
